Assignment 26: Celebrating Failure

1.       I failed when I took my first two exams for MAR3023 and QMB3250. I scored a 67 in QMB and a 70 in MAR. These two scores were well below the class average and hurt my grade quite a bit. I also felt very bad about myself and took a shot to my confidence because they were my first two exams at UF. I also was not ready to tell my parents about my failure so it was not a good time for me.
2.       What I learned from this failure is that I need to study much harder than what I was doing at Santa Fe. Before at Santa Fe, I could study just a little bit and I knew exactly what would be on the exams and I would do pretty well. At UF, I have to study more than what the teacher gives us because I don’t know exactly what will be on the exams so it is much more difficult.
3.       The way that I dealt with failure is that I would talk to my girlfriend about what I need to do. She helped me a lot because she has a 4.0 GPA in health sciences and is really good at school. She told me to get study edge and smokin notes and do practice problems a lot because they help to be prepared for the exam because it simulates the exam setting and questions. In the end, this advice helped me a lot and I scored an 82 on the next QMB exam and an 87 on the next MAR exam. This class has changed my perspective because I used to be very upset when I failed but this class has really emphasized that failure is necessary because it teaches you better than anything else about what you need to do next time.

  1. Hi Jonathan,

I can relate a lot to this type of failure because of how hard of a school the University of Florida is. Nothing can really prepare you for UF, the only thing that really does is the next exam. I always find my first exam score in each class to be the lowest because I then learn what the teacher thinks is important and what they want you to know. This type of failure is important because you have never been through it before. This will make you stronger in the long run and it will help with your tenacity towards school. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I can definitely relate to these failures. The first exam I took at UF was in Calculus 1 and I got a 67, needless to say I was disappointed. I had never done so poorly on an exam, and was surprised because I really thought I was ready for the exam. It taught me that not everything comes easy like it had done in highschool. That is great that you have your girlfriend to help you, because support and advice in these kinds of situations makes all the differences and clearly it did since your scores improved significantly.

  3. Hi Jonathan,
I have to say that I think you did a great job on this assignment in my opinion. I did my assignment on something different, but I’ve been through the same thing you are talking in your assignment so I can relate to it. These kind of assignments show us how we overcame failure during our life and this is really important.

  4. Hello Jonathan,
I can relate to this because I have too failed exams that I was not ready to take or felt unprepared for. The feeling after getting your score back feels terrible but once you know what you did wrong and what you have to do to succeed on the next exam is more challenging but once you do better or get the grade you were hoping for is much more rewarding in the end.
